Since 2011's Another Earth landed at Sundance and nabbed the SpecialJury Prize, Brit Marling has quickly cemented herself as one of themost exciting and challenging new talents. When she feels a genrehasn't been explored to its full potential, she takes it further. Whenshe notices women her age are typecast in boring roles, she writes herown. She's a visionary filmmaker with something to say and the talentand ambition to make sure she's heard - her second collaboration withdirector and co- writer Zal Batmanglij, The East, is no exception, andis perhaps the peak of her already illustrious career so far.
The film follows Jane Owen (Marling), an undercover security agent, asshe leaves behind her doting boyfriend (Jason Ritter) to infiltrate aneco-terrorist group known as The East, who have publicly targetedmassive corporations for their covered-up crimes against humans andnature. In between reports to her icy, amoral boss (Patricia Clarkson),Jane slowly grows fascinated with the group, its morals and goals, andits core (Alexander Skarsgard, Ellen Page, Shiloh Fernandez, TobyKebbell), observing with a mix of horror and infatuation as theyexecute their violent "jams" on the corporations' key members.
The East will inevitably draw comparisons to Sean Durkin's Martha MarcyMay Marlene because of the subject matter and its ingenue leadinglady.The East is not as much of a psychological profile, but there areinteresting similarities - like Durkin, Batmanglij and Marling neverreally villainize or condemn their subects; instead, they make a pointof showing the East's appeal. We, the audience, begin to understand whythese troubled young people would find solace and purpose in what isessentially a band of guerrilla terrorists, and, in turn, why Jane isso hypnotized by them. It makes for an uncomfortably provocative watch:as we learn more about the characters, their backgrounds, and thecorporations' crimes (which are based in fact), it's hard to determinewho the "bad guys" are. I saw the film at a festival where Batmanglijgave a short Q&A after and he revealed that he, Marling, and Page hadlived with similar groups (without the terrorism) before and weresympathetic with the East's cause, if not their methods. The sympathyshows in the writing and most of the time that's a good thing, butthere are times when it gets closer to bias and muddies otherwisebrilliant storytelling - but these are blips in the overall outstandingproduct.
Marling is, as always, enigmatic and hypnotizing, but she is anobserver and lets the other characters do the talking; it takes highlyskilled actors to command empathy for villains and the cast doesn'tdisappoint. Alexander Skarsgard is incredibly charismatic andpersuasive, and he fills in the blanks admirably whenever hisdevelopment is cut short. Patricia Clarkson surprises in an unusualrole for her - she hints that her character might be more evil than anyof the terrorists she is hunting. Jason Ritter and Hillary Baack areaffecting in their small roles, and Julia Ormond dominates her fiveminutes of screen time - her last scene is perhaps the most haunting inthe film. Ellen Page gives a career-best performances and reminds usthat she's a force to be reckoned with if only she were given thechance to show off more often. She commands the screen withintimidating animosity from the second she walks on screen and has somegenuinely heartbreaking moments later on.
In spite of occasional misfires, the screenplay is exceptionalespecially in its efficiency: there is so much going on that thereisn't much time to devote to individual characters or relationships -Marling and Ritter's suffers the most - but Marling and Batmanglij makeevery second count as each line is weighted with enough subtext to tellus the stories implicitly and thoroughly nevertheless. The majorcharacters are very well-drawn; even though we only get glimpses intoSkarsgard, Page and Kebbell's pasts, we feel we know them inside andout. The film moves along at a fluid, adrenaline-pumping pace and thetension is genuine and organic rather than forced - the audience'sinvestment in the story grows from affection for the characters andconnection with their ideals rather than cheap editing tricks,manipulative music and stylized lighting or sound. Music is used sosparsely that when The National's "About Today" plays over a silentmontage of Marling's character breaking down, its emotional weightsurprises and stuns. The ending is comparatively underwhelming, but theoverall package is one of the best, most provocative thrillers in yearsand firmly establishes Batmanglij and Marling as a sensational andimportant pairing.

I thought this was a good film.
Excellently acted, well written and directed.
I read the reviews on here before attending a screening last night, andwas expecting something less sophisticated, particularly based on thereviewer who said: "A well made but overly simplistic condemnation ofcorporate America. The eco-terrorist anarchists are presented asrighteous while imperfect, yet only corrupt examples of corporateAmerica are there to represent the seemingly, inevitably flawed stateof capitalism. If some individuals are evil, does that make allindividuals bad?"
In the Q&A that followed the film, the filmmakers said that althoughthe anarchist group was entirely fictionalized, every instance ofcorporate corruption is based, in exact and excruciating detail, onactual incidents of gruesome real-life corporate corruption.
The anarchist group is presented as righteous because they representthe majority of us who want justice, who feel powerless to stand up tothe corporatocracy that seems to have taken the wheel, in the UnitedStates and globally.
This movie isn't balanced because the world isn't balanced right now.Sure there might be a few CEO's of certain corporations who are notmyopic, but that certainly seems to be the exception. I think thismovie puts into a narrative what we're seeing all around us, that whenunregulated capitalism prevails, the bottom line trumps human life andcommon sense, and these titans of industry have gotten swept up withthe disease.
Well-told stories like these are part of a picture of how progresshappens.

Just saw this movie courtesy of the San Jose Camera Cinema Club. Thisis a well-acted, thought-provoking movie that asks many questions aboutthe balance between the excesses of corporate America and the excessesof violent anarchist groups fighting against them. (Think WeatherUnderground and the SLA.) The protagonist is a young woman working fora top private security company in the Washington DC beltway on behalfof those corporations. She's assigned to infiltrate an anarchist groupcalled "The East" to prevent damage to her company's corporate clients.The ensuing exposition of the anarchist group's actions ("jams") makesfor a very suspenseful and credible movie with many plot twists andturns including the ending of the movie, which is diffused with thecredits. Nothing is as it seems, just like a good spy movie ought tobe. So go see the movie and don't leave until the credits finishrolling.
